Kick returner Smith signs with Dolphins (AP)

Former Pro Bowl kick returner Clifton Smith has signed with the Miami Dolphins. Smith, released Sunday by Tampa Bay, joined the Dolphins for Wednesday's practice. He made the Pro Bowl with the Buccaneers as a rookie in 2008, when he averaged 27.6 yards on kickoff returns and 14.1 on punt returns. Smith led the NFL in kickoff returns in 2009 with an average of 29.1 yards.

Tampa Bay cornerback Aqib Talib will miss the Buccaneers' regular season opener after being suspended one game without pay for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. The third-year pro also was fined one additional game check stemming from Talib punching a cab driver in August 2009. In what was a much anticipated roster move this week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers released former 1,000-yard rusher Derrick Ward on Tuesday. Ward, signed as a free agent from the Giants last summer, was a big disappointment during his first and only season in Tampa, rushing for 409 yards in 14 games played. Ward fell further out of favor this offseason, with bad showings through training camp and preseason games this month. Coach Raheem Morris even questioned whether Ward?s lack of production was related to a lack of conditioning.
