Smith's four-year deal includes $6.25 million in guaranteed money in the first year and averages about $3 million a season.

He was cut by the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday and agreed to terms with the Texans earlier this week. The 27-year-old Leinart will be the No. 3 quarterback on the Texans behind Matt Schaub and Dan Orlovsky.

Houston Texans With so much uncertainty at backup quarterback with Dan Orlovsky and newly signed Matt Leinart, the coaches don't want to expose starting QB Matt Schaub more than necessary early in the season. Coach Gary Kubiak doesn't want Schaub to lead the league in passing attempts, completions and yardage for a second consecutive season. Kubiak says the best way to keep Schaub healthy is a productive running game. The Texans open the season with Arian Foster, Steve Slaton and Derrick Ward at running back.
